The Chemical Element Titanium

The Chemical Element Titanium

Titanium is one of the chemical elements present in the
periodic table. It has a symbol Ti and its atomic number is
22. It is light in weight, lustrous in appearance,
corrosion-resistant strong transition metal having a white
color. Titanium along with aluminum and iron is used to make
strong light-weight alloys. Titanium dioxide is one of its
compounds that is also the content of white pigments.

Titanium is extracted from Rutile and ilmenite. Titanium has
two allotropes and five isotopes. Ti-48 an isotope of
titanium is found in abundance. The distinguishing quality
of titanium is that though its strength is at par with steel
its weight is just the half of steel. Physically and
chemically Titanium is similar to zirconium. The most
notable feature of Titanium is its excellent quality to
resist corrosion, which is similar to that of platinum.
Other salient features are; it does not react when acids,
common salt solution or moist chlorine gas attack. Pure
Titanium is insoluble in water but dissolves in concentrated
acids.

A compound of titanium is used as a white pigment to cover
paints, plastics and paper. Paints that contain titanium
dioxide reflect infrared radiations and find their use in
astronomy and paints used for exterior walls. Titanium is
also utilized for providing strength to paper, gemstones and
cement.

Titanium has the ability to withstand high temperatures. The
alloys of titanium are used in aircraft, naval ships, armor
plating, spacecraft and missiles. Titanium is used for
reduction of grain size in steel. It is also used for
deoxidization but it reduces the carbon level in stainless
steel. Titanium is alloyed very well with aluminium, copper,
manganese, vanadium, molybdenum, iron, and some other
metals.

Titanium dioxide is one of the main constituents of
sunscreen lotions because it has an ability to protect skin
against harmful radiations. Being physiologically inert,
titanium is used in joint replacement implants like those in
hip ball and sockets. It is also used to make medical
equipments. Most attractive among all the uses of titanium
is its use for body piercing because it is inert and it can
be colored magnificently. Titanium can help to integrate
bones. That is why it is employed in dental implants too.
Titanium is sometimes used for constructing amazing things
like the memorial of Yuri Gagarin.
